Job summary


 

 

In collaboration with the Director, HR/H&S, the Health and Safety Coordinator will support the governance of internal practices aimed at achieving operational excellence and supports the application of health and safety practices in alignment with the company’s work processes and initiatives.  


Key Responsibilities:


• Facilitate compliance with Health and Safety regulatory bodies and standards such as, but not limited to, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations. 

• Support the maintenance of and on-going improvements to the company health and safety management (HSM) program ensuring that ISO 45001 standards are met or exceeded.

• Incident management, reporting and investigation using incident data to identify trends and recommend preventive measures.

• Monitor employees and subcontractors on site to ensure compliance to safety procedures and escalate issues to resolution.

• Maintain third party Customer procurement websites such as ISNetworld®, Contractor Compliance, Cognibox, etc.

• Maintain and update HMS platform (BIS Safety Software)

Job Duties:


• Research occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the workplace.

• Develop and deploy health and safety procedures by working with department leaders and utilizing resources (e.g: Manufacturer’s Manual)

• Foster a culture of collaboration by working closely with management, supervisors, and employees to promote continuous improvement in health and safety practices.

• Prepare and deliver presentations to relevant stakeholders, ensuring clear understanding of procedures and processes.

• Advise on improvements in tracking and reporting procedures.

• Perform job site process compliance inspections including hazard analysis, work procedures, quality assurance, make written reports and recommendations.

• Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and other relevant information.

• Ensure annual inspections are completed on legislated equipment (e.g: fall protection equipment)

• Assist in the identification, development, and facilitation of training programs.

• Participate in new hire orientation.

• Monitor adherence to the company safety program by all OE’s employees and subcontractors.

• In collaboration with purchasing facilitate subcontractor qualification process, audit, and monitor subcontractor safety performance to ensure they are meeting site safety requirements.

• Respond to incidents or a request for an assessment, which may lead to further investigation and recommendations for remedial action and necessary follow-up.

• Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury investigations, assist with the implementation of identified corrective actions and facilitate all incident close out meetings.

• Analyze and report on accident and injury data, identifying the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs.

• Co-Chair the JHSC meetings (document and report) and coordinate follow-up activities.

• Assist with Return-To-Work programs.

• Participate in H&S accreditation and performance audits (e.g., ISO 45001, COR™).

• Participate in third-party inspections/investigations such as with The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

• Make recommendations to process improvements to increase the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of company operations.

• Other related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements:


• 3+ years’ experience in a similar role.

• Valid G class driver's license is required as will be required to travel to job sites.

• Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable codes, standards, guidelines and government legislation specifically the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, etc.

• Ability to work in both field and office environments.

• Continuous Improvement tools experience (i.e. waste elimination, standard work, root cause analysis, etc.)

• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.

• Very organized, proactive with sound planning, prioritization, and execution skills

• A strong passion for fostering a safe work environment.

• Ability to get along well with a variety of personalities and individuals.

• Strong PC skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.

• Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times.


Preferred Requirements:


• Post-secondary degree or diploma/in occupational health and safety or human resources.   

• 3+ years’ experience in a similar role within the Construction field (heavy civil or underground utilities).

• Canadian Registered Safety Technician  (CRST),  NCSO designation is also an asset.

• Experience with the COR™ accreditation program or ISO 45001.

• Manual dexterity is required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

• Physical ability to lift 50 lbs unassisted.

• Travel between regional business units and job sites required.

• Work environment:  indoors and outdoors, construction sites or similar, public areas, exposure to all seasonal weather, dust, etc.

• Must be able to wear and use all required safety equipment such as, but not limited to: Hi-vis wear, hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses, respiratory protection, fall protection.

• Overtime may be required to respond to emergencies during irregular hours.
